Action Plans:
While understanding the problem and the issues that contribute to the suicide rate of the elderly in Singapore, it has given me a deeper responsibility to help improve the situation. In the video, there were a few common reasons why the elderly would think of suiciding I would like to focus on a few of them which is attainable on my reach.
Firstly, getting involved by pay a visit to some HDB community centres such as TOUCH Community Service, "Sarah" Seniors Activity Centre, Pacific Activity Centre (Sengkang), AWWA Community Home for Senior Citizens located at Ang Mo Kio to communicate with the elderly who were at the centre which is a better approach as it would be more comfortable for the elderly to voice out their feelings. In visiting them, I would also befriend the seniors so that they would have an avenue of emotional support. I would also educate the seniors about avenues of help they can turn to if they ever feel lonely. I plan to visit either Fei Yue Senior Activity Centre (Bukit Batok), SilverACE or Touch Community service the community centres by the end of 2018.
Secondly, is to cooperate with either Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) to be able to be part of their work.
Being able to be a volunteer in Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) if possible as I understand the training needed is very strict. However, I would like to pay a few visits to the organisation to improve my ability to lend a listening ear in a confidential and non-judgmental manner so that I would be able to help not even elderly but everyone, in general, to help them to think more positivity instead of having suicidal thoughts. Therefore, the action that I would take is to hope that SOS would allow me to be a part of the activities during my visit as I know that SOS provides and able to understand the issues more. I hope to be able to process with my plan by the end of January 2019 as in December they are always quite busy. From this plan, I hope to be able to understand more of the reason why the elderly are having thoughts of suiciding and how I can understand the problem and be able to stop them with doing so.
Lastly, If I have some spare time left, I would also like to be part of the Care Corner Social Day Care for the Elderly ['SDC']’s programme as the objective of it is achievable by me
They have a program called the Care Corner Social Day Care for the Elderly ['SDC'] which supports the needs of busy families who are unable to care for their elderly family members while they are at work. Through a warm, caring and safe home-like environment, we keep our seniors mentally, physically and socially healthy. Individual care plans are created for our seniors, to actively engage them through planned activities. We also provide nutritious meals for them.
