Suicide rates in Singapore jumped to 429 last year – a 20 percent increase from 2015. Base on a report by the Samaritans of Singapore.
77 young adults –those between 20 and 29 years old – killed themselves last year.
That averages out to be over 6 deaths per month.
Still, the highest increase of suicides comes from persons age 50 years and above.
They accounted for 197 deaths last year, or 46 percent of all suicides.
SOS said helpline callers from this age group indicate that they face stressors such as employment issues, financial worries, family relationships, mental health, physical and psychological impairment and chronic health problems.
Men in their fifties are especially at risk as they experience “significant life changes” such as retrenchment, financial issues and retirement.
These men are also more likely to avoid seeking help.
If you know anyone who you believe needs help, encourage them to call the 24-hour SOS hotline 1800-221 4444.
